Being a teen can be really hard! The teen years are filled with emotional highs and lows as physical and emotional growth takes place. Teens face internal and external challenges as they try to cope with puberty, hormonal changes, and social, parental, and school pressures. Teens may feel overwhelmed when faced with the stress which comes from making decisions regarding their college and career choices
Very often when a teen begins therapy it is at the suggestion of the parents because what is bothering the teen is also affecting the parents. Family therapy can be appropriate and helpful to address certain issues affecting the family. However, in some cases, it would be more helpful for me to work with the teen one on one.
Parents need to feel that their teen’s therapist is someone that they are comfortable with, but ultimately it is necessary that the teen feels comfortable with and trusts the therapist. I will work with the teen to build a safe and nonjudgmental space where trust can grow. Once the teen is in treatment, continued support from the parents is essential.
